I have learned a lot and can see potential use for many of the things I've been exposed to. I think using on-line buisiness tools instead of licensing MS products might save the library money! It's worth looking into. Sharing tagging duty with other librarians is also a possibility and would enhance searching for us. It was funny to look at the list of Web 2.0 winners for 2007 and see things in first place I never heard of!

I wish there had been more guidance or actual classes for some of the explorations. I often felt under the gun to get through a session, and although I might want to take more time with it, the time was used up trying to figure things out, making mistakes, learning how to delete off the blog and then repost. If someone shows me how to do something, I pick it up easily. But teaching myself, especially when the computer at work might be very slow, is frustrating.

Some of the staff blogs are wonderful. They are beautiful to look at and easy to read. I think that many of these staff probably have been blogging before, or use their free time to do so. It would be to the system's advantage to tap some of that talent/interest to design some of what we offer the public or for our intranet. We have so many talented and interesting staff!

Bookmarksonomies

I can see where keeping track of interesting sites I come across is made easier by using delicious. I don't know about sharing this or following someone else, though. To me, it would mean using a lot of time online hunting and pecking and then giving myself yet one more place to use time exploring. Not that that's bad, just I wonder how many people really stay up all night doing this and what else I might do with that time. I like being able to access the info from anywhere--that is helpful. If tagging could be used in the system to add to the catalog for easier searching, that would be fantastic! I think that a Wiki would be very useful--for short term projects--especially where the participants are geographically unable to get together. It is a wonderful tool for editing a list or composing and updating a document. I noticed that on many of the pages on the Wikis we were pointed to, that the updating hadn't been done in ages, or that the pages linked to were no longer available. One of the downsides to any web page, not just ones on Wikis. Like many things, as interest wanes, or the participants move on, the pages just become outdated pages. And like the ALA example, there is so much to read, you could spend hours clicking around--so is that a good use of time? I thought the tips given to conference goers about what to do in the city would have been very useful but only for the short time before the conference.

zohoexploration

January 21, 2009

Workblog1

I haven't signed up for an account, but used my gmail account for my blog. This will allow me to not have another login/password to remember! Of course, it may end up that I won't be able to figure out how to save this document, get back to it, share it and all that. I would welcome the chance to use some of this new web 2.0 experience in a real collaborative setting, however, I'm not sure when I would have time! I read in the newspaper this morning how only 4% of internet users actually read blogs. The author's conclusion was that bloggers by and large are having conversations with themselves! I talk to myself sometimes so that makes sense, but I do it so low tech that it doesn't take half the time!
